Wild Birds Unlimited Clearwater/Safety Harbor’s First Bird of the Month Contest Has a WINNER! Scooter’s all a Twitter!
Scooter is excited to announce that the Clearwater/Safety Harbor Wild Birds Unlimited’s first Bird of the Month Contest has drawn to a close! And the winner is a Florida favorite: The Northern Cardinal with a popular photo submission from WBU Clearwater/Safety Harbor Fan, Jennifer Rothe.
Jennifer’s photo of a baby Cardinal resting on a branch near its nest was a fan favorite and drew lots of attention. Clearly one of America’s most admired birds, the Northern Cardinal is also one of the most easily recognized; with the males’ striking red plumage and black masks shading around the eyes of both genders, this regal bird is among the most sought after in avian photography and cinematography. Played against backgrounds of snow-covered hills or nestled within the vibrant green hues of whatever foliage surrounds it, the Northern Cardinal makes for a very fascinating subject.
Preferring to dine on seeds and berries, Northern Cardinals will consume insects and mealworms especially during times of nesting and bearing or raising young. While the female cardinal, a duller orange hue, sits watch over their eggs and nestlings, the male will forage for food and then feed her as she rests on her nest.
Northern Cardinals cover a wide, year-round range of the United States so spotting one in your Florida backyard habitat and general neighborhood is a common and happy occurrence. Wild Birds Unlimited in Clearwater/Safety Harbor suggests feed including Sunflower and Safflower. While they prefer to feed on the ground near hedges and dense shrubbery, they will readily make use of platform feeders, suet cages and tube feeders.
Due to its normally dapper appearance, it is most shocking to see a Northern Cardinal in full-molt. While disturbing to see, this is a normal process of natural growth and serves as a healthy pattern of replacing worn feathers with newer, stronger ones. While they are not ill, all birds require and benefit from fortified seed and feed during these times so make sure your feeders are stocked with fresh seed for just such a reason.
An aggressive bird during mating season, Cardinals are among the top culprits when it comes to window crashes. Seeing their own reflections, male Cardinals assume a defensive position among their territory and crash into the window in an attempt to stave off their imagined competition. Since injury can occur, you can safeguard your Florida home by adding chimes, decals (on the outside of windows), and statuary positioned to harmlessly warn away the bird from the window areas.
Wild Birds Unlimited in Clearwater/Safety Harbor congratulates our friend Jennifer Rothe with a $20 dollar gift card for use at our WBU Clearwater/Safety Harbor location! Thanks to Jennifer for allowing us to share her picture of this favorite of Florida’s wild birds, the Northern Cardinal!
